What Is TMJ Dysfunction?

TMJ dysfunction (TMJ injury) is an injury to the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ), the hinge joint that connects your lower jaw to the temporal bone of your skull.

In Alberta, TMJ Dysfunction (a type of TMJ injury) is subject to specific rules under the Minor Injury Regulations, Joseph Nagy, Injury LawyerThe joint is in front of the ear on each side of your head. Place your fingers in front of your ears and put light pressure there while moving your jaw up and down. You will feel your Temporomandibular Joint. There are several complex components to your TMJ, such as muscle, bone, ligaments, and cartilage.

Damage or displacement of the cartilage can occur when there is a rapid acceleration/deceleration movement of the head, such as in a motor vehicle accident. TMJ Dysfunction often accompanies whiplash.

Common symptoms of TMJ Dysfunction include:

  • pain or tenderness in the jaw joint when you chew, speak, or open your mouth wide
  • restricted jaw opening
  • clicking, popping, or grating sounds in the jaw joint when opening or closing your mouth
  •  “locking” of the jaw
  • headaches, ear aches, tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • grinding your teeth at night while sleeping.

Most people with TMJ symptoms do not recognize that they have a TMJ injury and do not understand TMJ injuries. The symptoms are unique and unusual to them. They do not mention the symptoms to their doctor.

If you experience these symptoms, speak to your physician about them. Contact Joseph A. Nagy to discuss a referral to a TMJ specialist for a comprehensive evaluation and diagnosis.

Mr. Nagy helped me with my claim last year and managed to get me the best possible settlement (I was fighting against a very large and well-funded company with a dedicated legal department). Mr. Nagy handled my case with skill, determination and compassion. I would not be in my current state had it not been for his very prompt and professional response and actions on my behalf.

I highly recommended (and I still do!) him to my friends and colleagues who are or may be in a similar situation that I was in a year ago. I have nothing but high praise and respect for Mr. Nagy for taking on cases to protect and give the ‘little guys’ a fighting chance against the large and well-heeled entities of this world.
